Web-centric corporate LAN's are Intranets

Inside our companies we see ever rising expectations for finding the right information just in time - "sharing," it, and now, collaborating with Workgroup peers on it. Then, we recognize LAN based Intranets  are extendable, not just to remote employees, but to customers, partners, services and suppliers - by VPN.

Corporate staff is electronically collaborating when they share, or "publish" to a document center. They do so from desktops using familiar applications like Microsoft Office's word and spreadsheet utilities. When they do so within the context and security of a private, company Intranet.  they are also working over a limited, Virtual Private network - an often used name to describe a secure LAN, or. a corporate Intranet.  

If the Intranet  is "extended" (by, for example, server software like Microsoft's Office 2000 Extensions, or Site Server 3.0) the "document centers" are the company's internal web sites extended. It's done with password and protocol control over the Internet with security protocols, software and hardware (e.g., PPT, proxy servers, firewalls). The extended Intranet  is today, what's meant by VPN (although sounding like a new advance, it's where networking was 20, 30 and 40 years ago with proprietary network protocols from IBM, HP and DEC. 

CBC's Web Centric Intranet  - Agora

CBC's Intranet  serves it's Affiliates as a meeting place, Workgroup/Project collaboration center and company database access center by password. Agora is a VPN resource.

Collaboration resources range from FrontPage to Net Meeting and use server based Office 2000 Extensions.   Virtual Private Networks (VPN)

VPN's can be designed for employees only - internal or remote and extended to partners and customers by password and other filtering screens, e.g., routing firewalls like.

Secure extensions of LAN Intranets  over the Internet are called Virtual Private Networks. It's what we do after we "collaborate and publish" internally - reach out for efficiencies with customers and suppliers - all to be early on to increase sales, profits and corporate image, not later, when it's only catch-up time and profit increases are already gone.

When secure distribution from a LAN can be extended to remote locations - over an Internet connection - to include vendors, business partners or, for examples, a company's Direct Public Offering (DPO) marketing team, ad agency, printer or outsourced "Virtual Marketing Management" services, an organization value added VPN is operable.
